2007 - A unimpressive breeding season for the kites

The Chilterns Red Kites have had a less than impressive breeding season this year. Although it is natural for some nests to fail occasionally, this year saw a higher than usual number of failures, both here in the Chilterns and also around the country.

A possible reason for this is the summer we never had! Extremely wet and damp and cold weather conditions throughout spring and summer did nothing to help the kites during the breeding season - eggs never hatched, or chicks died before they fledged.

However, all is not lost. The Red Kite is doing well, and one breeding year that hasn't been as successful as previous ones shouldn't impact the population in the long term.
